After placing third at the 2019 Badger Conference meet, the Wauna-fo gymnastics had big ambitions for the 2020 season, but now they are just hoping to practice. They were able to have one week of practice prior to being “cancelled” due to the new Dane County Orders.
Senior Lexi Burgard explains how this season will be very different from any other, “Usually, we practice 5 days a week from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. But this year, having a team of 20 girls we have to split into two groups and practice only two days a week.” She adds, “This is really hard for any sport not being able to practice [the amount that is considered normal] but for us it is especially challenging due to the fact that we can’t train at home.”
Another unique struggle they face is having a team made up of athletes from Waunakee and DeForest high school. This makes it difficult to get together (when allowed) but “Our coach’s Brittany Amanda and Kayla have been really good at trying to keep us active and have started zoom conditioning and team bonding.”- Burgard.
If competition can resume, Burgard says a large goal will be to earn a team score of 140 is something they are aiming for–especially after losing many talented seniors last year. Personally, she hopes to score a 9 on floor and have all of her routines consistent and strong. The team remains faithful that they will be able to reunite and compete this winter.
